Dyeing

colour-wheelMaking colour!
Think of a colour… and there’s a plant to make it!

Alpaca comes in a huge range of wonderful natural colours, but also takes dye beautifully. We love using natural plant dyes like woad, indigo, madder, weld, and even onion skins. You do need a small amount of chemical in preparing the fleece, but after the dyeing is all down to the plants, and the colours look just amazing on alpaca (and even more so on blended yarns).

The blankets below are woven from blend of suri alpaca and rare breed sheep, dyed with natural plant extracts (madder root for the coral colour; elderberry and cochineal for the pink; and indigo for the blue).
